4. Enforce consequences neutrally

Don’t: dramatize.

Why not? It’s manipulative and punitive.

Do: be matter-of-fact about taking the action you said you would.

Why? To send the message that you are in control of yourself and your consequences are reasonable.

Example: Jill was calm and uncomplaining about implementing her consequence with her mother. She didn’t get angry and she didn’t pressure the rest of the family to leave with her or punish them because they didn’t. Her calm resolve made it difficult for her mother to fault her.
